Antara - Crystal Game

Antara, the land full of life and happy inhabitants, has seen no miseries and hardships for centuries. The cities have been thriving, harvests have been rich, and people have known no sickness. The majority of well-doing Antarians considered general welfare their own merit, and feebly believed in the legend on the seven Spheres which protected Antara from evil; few people were grateful to them and just the chosen ones saw the Spheres. As the ancient frescos on the walls of the temple said, the Seven sacred Spheres had been given by gods and the Levites have been guarding them carefully, and restored their energy by colorful crystals. Year in year out that has been so, but once a guardian accidentally let fall a black crystal into one of the Spheres. Many people believe that it was that very day when Magneus was born. Magneus was a child of evil, studying the ancient black magic he became a hermit and hated humans so much that demons found refuge in his soul. Even strolling actors and merchants avoided his dark castle. No one told Magneus about the sacred Spheres, he felt them, endless visions in his dreams and ghostly whisper showed him the way. The guardians weren't ready for a battle, spells and curses escaped Magneus's lips, illuminating his cruel face with magic light. Having defeated all the guardians he went into the crystals' stockroom. The sky over Antara enclouded black when Magneus with all his hatred and magic powers poisoned the sacred Spheres making them as dark as his heart.

He hid each Sphere under a metal lock and closed them with spells. The earth got absorbed with evil. Wars, illnesses and hunger settled down in Antarian towns, and the souls of Antarians got filled with hatred and fear. Collecting crystals you should clear up the sacred Spheres and save the inhabitants of Antara. But be careful! Cunning helpers of the wizard will send their creatures and magic on you, and in case this doesn't work they are going to wage battle against you.

Prince of Persia RIP[3.18 GB]

The adventure begins with the Prince seeking his donkey, Farah, but is caught in a fierce sandstorm. When the storm subsides, he finds himself in a mythical garden of beauty, dominated at its center by a temple which contains the tree of life. The Prince pursues and subsequently saves Elika, who requests that he follow her into the temple. When they arrive inside the temple, Elika's father destroys the tree of life, which frees the evil Ahriman. After being set free, Ahriman, who is a god, begins corrupting the land with evil. Elika's father shows hostility toward the Prince, who fights until her father retreats. Elika explains that there are multiple fertile grounds branched out through the land that she has to reach and heal, in order to again give the tree of life power, imprisoning Ahriman. As the Prince and Elika travel to and heal each fertile ground, Elika reveals her past. She says her mother died, and her father became depressed shortly after. Elika also died, but her father could not handle his grief, and so made a deal with Ahriman. Her father freed Ahriman, who brought Elika back to life in return. As the Prince and Elika make their way back to the temple, they encounter Elika's father once again, who is killed by the Prince. Ahriman encounters the duo, but is held off by the Prince, as Elika heals the tree of life. The Prince eventually realizes that Elika is transferring her own life into the tree to heal it, and is dying again. The Prince cuts down the tree of life, just as Elika's father had done, to bring her back to life. As Ahriman's corruption again plagues the land, the Prince carries Elika into the desert.

Did you ever watch the prison movie The Shawshank Redemption and wished you could be the warden running the place? If so, there's a slight chance you might be interested in checking out Prison Tycoon 4: SuperMax. Yep, that's right. It's a tycoon simulator featuring prison as its setting. It's also the fourth installment in a series you've probably never heard of. While SuperMax sounds like a chain of oversized grocery stores, no such thing is involved. Although, I'd much rather be at a grocery store, than play this prison of a game. From playing Prison Tycoon 4, I can see why the warden from The Shawshank Redemption shot himself in the head.

Essentially, you should avoid this game like Sean Connery tries to avoid The Rock. While there's nothing necessarily wrong with a prison game based on the tycoon formula, Prison Tycoon 4's biggest problem is its execution. First of all, this game comes with no manual, not even an insert. Most importantly, there is no in-game tutorial. While this wouldn't really hurt, say, racing games or point-and-click adventures, developers should get locked-up for not including in-game tutorials for strategy management games. It gets exponentially more painful when you couple this with an unintuitive interface.

Throughout your time as the warden, you will be confronted with all of the tasks of running a prison. This means acquiring inmates, managing your economy, assigning people jobs, and yes, you'll sometimes need to issue a beat down. You'll do this from a top-down isometric camera angle. But all of this is severely hindered by a lack of an in-game tutorial. As a result, you'll often know what to do, but not how to do it. It gets even hairier when you do know what to do, but your commands don't work.

One time I wanted to break up a fight, so I tossed some tear gas at the warring prisoners, but nothing really happened. They proceeded to beat the living snot out of each other. You can try to send prisoners to their cells by putting things in lockdown mode, but a lot of them won't retreat to their quarters; and the ones that do come back out after a few seconds. So you'll then want to send a guard to break up the fight, but figuring out how to do that without proper instructions is extremely frustrating.

Since it's pretty much impossible to tell the difference between a guard and a prisoner in the yard, you'll have to open up the submenu. From there you click on the guard tab, select a specific guard, look at the minimap to check the whereabouts of the guard, close the submenu, investigate the most recent known whereabouts of the guard, locate and right mouse click the guy (you can't create a drag box to select anything in this game), move him into the action, right mouse click on a troubled prisoner, and select the beat-him-up icon. By the time you try to initiate all of this, a prisoner might have already died. If this all sounds convoluted it is. The whole game is like this, and it really hurts to not have a proper tutorial.

Trying to be the responsible warden, I tried to break up the action as best as possible by separating different gang members into separate work environments. As it turns out, assigning prisoners different jobs is another painful task. You would think that all you would have to do is to select a prisoner and right click on the area you want him to work at. But that's too simple and intuitive for Prison Tycoon 4. To assign a prisoner a job, you have to open up the submenu, click on the prisoner tab, check the minimap at the top of the screen, select a building you want him to work in, select a position you want him to work at, and finally exit out of the window. After you've done that, the prisoner may still not listen to you. So what you have to do then is open up that submenu again, click on the prisoner tab, select the specific prisoner you wish to command, and edit his daily routine so that he works as much as possible. However, even after that, prisoners would still disobey me. So then I tried sending a guard over to teach him a lesson. Once the prisoner was beaten up, he scampered off to the medical facility. After that, he went off and did his own thing. While you can order your staff around, you can't directly control your prisoners.

Once you successfully get them to work, you'll be disappointed to see that the interface doesn't easily allow you to track your prisoners' work progress. The menus only tell you that your prisoner is scheduled to work, but it doesn't tell you where. Thus, to see if he's doing his job, you've got to once again navigate through the submenu, click on the prisoner, and see if he's following instructions.

But managing people isn't the only part of this game. It wouldn't be a tycoon game if you couldn't construct and destroy various buildings. As the warden, you can build housing, recreational, security, medical, work, and staff buildings; most of which have advisors that give you nearly worthless tips. Once you select a building and plant it to the ground, it will rapidly grow before your eyes. However, without indoor furnishings, they will merely be a worthless shell. Building a dormitory? Prisoners won't be shipped over to your yard until you equip them with beds, and what good is an office building with no offices? To construct within buildings, you must first click on the building to "enter" it; which basically crops off the roof and locks the camera right on top of the structure. Here you can spend money to deploy rooms and other furnishings.

However, whenever you figure something out on your own, another problem arises which pretty much summed up my whole entire Prison Tycoon 4 experience. I can't stress how unintuitive this interface is. The game will throw icons at you and expect you to know what they mean. Certain prisoner's sentences will be listed as "3." Well, three what? Days? Weeks? Years? The saving icon looks like the loading icon, and vice-versa. Everything is simply too unpolished and it all reeks of bargain bin.

I wish I could say that the game's graphics are decent, but unfortunately they also suck. Hey, at least the game is consistent! The visuals look dated, the textures leave something to be desired, colors are drab, and everything is low polygonal. The best thing about this game is the music. While the score is far from good, unlike nearly everything else in this game, the tunes don't make me want to blow my brains out.

Closing Comments
While I've never been to prison, Prison Tycoon 4: SuperMax paints a pretty good picture of what the painful experience must be like. Therefore a part of me admires its dedication to its source material. However, as a game, Prison Tycoon 4 is really slow and boring at its best, and extremely confusing, painful, and even racist at its worst. At 20 bucks, this game is really overpriced. As a matter of fact, if you got this game for free, you still might feel ripped off. One of the few good things about this game is that it boots up and doesn't freeze on you; however, sometimes I wish it did. Give yourself a get-out-of-jail-free card and escape out of this prison.

Highlight new features for the PC / MAC include:

3D Match Engine - This year's match engine has seen more testing than ever before having been extensively beta tested in Football Manager Live for the past year.

The famous Football Manager match engine can now be viewed in full 3D with motion captured animations for the players. Sports Interactive has been working on the 3D match engine for nearly 3 years with the support of SEGA Japan's Virtue Striker team who provided the motion capture data and some of the animations.

You can now watch your matches in 3D from multiple camera angles and re-watch any part of the match by fast forwarding and rewinding the action using a new match time bar that flags the key moments in the game.

The old 2D view of the match engine is still there, especially for those people whose computers aren't powerful enough to take advantage of the 3D views.

TV View - Watch your matches in new full screen TV view and customise your match day screen with widgets to view the information you need as a football manager, be it player performance, match action zones, pitch radar, latest scores and many more.

Assistant Manager Feedback - Pre-match and in-match feedback from your Assistant Manager on how the team is performing and your player's motivation levels, as well as hints on how your tactics are working and how you could outwit the opposition's tactics.

Improved Media - SI have worked hard to reflect the greater impact the media has been having in recent years on the world of football, in the in-game dealings with the press. The game now features more news stories, more detail and greater media interaction than ever before, creating an even more realistic simulation of the football world.

Press Conferences - Attend pre-match and post-match press conferences with local and national journalists and build up relationships with them over time, but choose your answers carefully because they could come back to haunt you in the media at a later date.

Transfer System - Completely new and re-written transfer system code, providing an even more realistic simulation of real-life football transfers.

Transfer Rumours - View the latest news on what players are being speculated on, and who's said to be interested in securing their services.

Board Confidence - Following on from its addition in Football Manager 2008, board confidence has been expanded and improved. In addition, the board will now also offer feedback on your squad harmony and your club's stature in the football world.

Preferred Moves - Train your players to learn 'preferred moves' to add to their game. For example, train central defenders to not dive into tackles, or wingers to do step-over's before crossing the ball.

Female Manager - For the very first time you can now play as a female manager. All of the text in the game now also has a female gender so the game represents female managers and staff in the game in the correct gender.

Realistic Finances - SI have listened to feedback from all of their researchers to try and model every single financial area of the game correctly for each country, including transfers, staff wages, budgets, ticket prices, season tickets, competition bonuses and club sponsorships.

Updated Competitions - Fully updated for the new 2008/09 football season with all the latest league, club and player data, featuring over 5,000 playable clubs from over 50 countries, and around 350,000 players and staff from around the world, drawn fresh from the famous Sports Interactive database.

Widescreen Support - As a result of usability testing on Football Manager 2008, this year sees widescreen support for the game for the first time, as well as lots of tweaks to the user interface for easier navigation.
